Design and Safety Assessment of an Emergency Personnel Locator Beacon

Provision of a Human Factors Integration Plan and usability testing criteria checklist for design of an Emergency Personnel Locator Beacon.

The work includes detailed operability assessments and integration of the beacon with lifejackets, lifecraft, aircrew equipment assemblies and provision of an Integrated Test and Evaluation Plan.

Trials will be undertaken using different crew populations with different aircrew clothing in different cockpit configurations (including fast jet, rotary, and training aircraft) so as to ensure that compliance with Human Factors requirements can be validated and verified.

Co-author of re-write of Defence Standard 00970: External Vision in Military Aircraft

This was based upon extensive research of vision standards from the USA and other industries. It was also supported by a number of vision plot assessments of Operational Aircraft so as to priortise requirements for Defence Standard update.

Colour Map Specification for Eurofighter Typhoon Aircraft

Paul wrote the specification for the Typhoon colour map. The specification provided specific requirements for colour conventions, colour pairings, contrast based upon key environmental constraints such as impact of high sunlight conditions on colour perception.

Vision Plot Assessments of Harrier, Hawk and Jaguar Aircraft

This task included assessments of pilot external and internal vision with the seat in a full range of positions so as to address worst case conditions to inform requirements for the update of Defence Standard 00970: External Vision in Military Aircraft.
